LP Review: Censored Colors
Release Date: September 16, 2008
Maybe it’s the fact that John and Zach grew up with those long dark winters and crazy light all day summers of Alaska that push this
band to the brink of it’s own eclectic sound. Mixing heavy thrashing with melodic ballads, Portugal. The Man has outdone themselves
with their newest release, CENSORED COLORS.
LAY ME BACK DOWN
Ahhh…a song that refreshingly takes you back in time to the great sounds of the 70’s BEFORE the disco period. Stellar vocals & bass
lines mixed with the icy sound of the piano high keys turn this into an instant classic.
COLORS
With a sound reminiscent of the Beatles, only ratcheted up for this millennium, “Colors” will leave you pondering life through it’s
timeless lyrics. Great tune with outstanding percussion.
AND I
Wonderfully contrasted mix of music that date we even say compares to the style of musical progression of the late John Lennon.
SALT
Surf rock is back? Well, sort of. This tune kicks off with that great 60’s surf rock guitar before kicking it in to high gear with powerful
bass lines. “Salt” is a truly unique song with vocals that repeat lyrically, but change tone throughout. Listen to the end for a vocal twist.
CREATED
This acoustic gem is both dark and melodic. The vocals are sad, yet thought provoking, all behind a violin and acoustic guitar track
that will move your soul.
Out and IN and In and Out
True to the feel of the entire LP, this track is pure vintage.
INTERMISSION:
Just what is says…a little intermission music with a Latin flavor
NEW ORLEANS
This piece creates a truly haunting sound with soft percussion and full echo on the vocals. Add in light saxophone mixed with a
harmonica and “New Orleans” redefines dark jazz.
NEVER PLEASE:
Imagine an organ driven by synthesizers fronted by chamber vocals.
SIT BACK AND DREAM
Short and powerful, this track opens with a manic violin that morphs into the angst and strength of John’s vocals.
HARD TIMES/Our Times
This track rings of classic rock, but takes on a feel of it’s own with backing horns and an inspiring beat. A unique piece to say the least.
ALL MINE
This track reminds one of finding a real gem on the "B' side of an old 45.
1989
The cleanest sound of the electric guitar is music to your ears. A perfect precursor to the final track.
OUR WAY
A perfect ending for this well produced LP. The repeating chorus fading out will make you want to start the journey all over once
again.

Founded in Wasilla, AK,
but based out of Portland,
OR, Portugal. The Man
has built a steady fan base
by sticking to the roots of
an eclectic sound that hints
at folk and blues, but
screams of rock with heavy
guitar riffs, heart pounding
drum beats, and at times a
maniacal bass line. John
Gourley's vocals add yet
another dimension with an
amazing range and an
emphasis on falsetto. Part
poetry, part political, and
all mesmerizing truly
defines Portugal. The Man.
